Burgundy - Red Wines

An “expensive nightmare,” is how one well-known master of wine described the red wines of Burgundy.  The combination of insatiable demand, relatively small production and a large number of greedy producers make it extremely difficult to find affordable Burgundy.  The vineyards are divided into numerous small parcels owned by a plethora of different families and companies.  Individual growers may for example produce just one barrel, enough to fill just 25 cases, of a particular appellation. As a result the Burgundian wine trade is polarised between growers and negociants. Behind a negociants label may well be the produce of many different plots and cellars. A good name or a good vintage is no guarantee of a good wine, but these in combination can produce stunning wines.
