of the most enjoyable ways to drink a Hock or Moselle is as an apéritif.
Fragrant and self contained, they tend to be medium to sweet. Try
the Beerenauslese as an alternative to Sauternes for dessert.
It is wonderfully long on the palate without the heavy alcohol of the
French equivalents.
Chile & Argentina - White
Wines
Chile
& Argentina are now beginning to attract significant attention from wine
critics as areas producing well made value for money wines. The Sauvignon style
is a half way house between the profound New Zealand examples and the more
restrained upper Loire, whilst the Chilean Chardonnay is a delicious example
showing that good Chardonnay does not need the influence of oak ageing.
Italy - White Wines
Italy
offers some of the most interesting, different and good value wines to be found.
The whites have now passed the state of almost neutrality.
Producers are mastering low yields, cold maceration and temperature
controlled fermentation. Oak is
used with far more understanding than formerly.
