Loire - White Wines

The Loire is a huge wine growing area following the river Loire for a third of its meandering six mile length.  Few wine drinkers can name more than one or two of the wines of the Loire.  There are many grape varieties planted and the most common are Sauvignon Blanc used in Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé, Muscadet used in the wine of the same name and Chenin Blanc used in Savennierres.  The wines of Muscadet are bone-dry and perfect with a plate of shellfish; Sancerre, Pouilly Fumé and Quincy are distinctive and more fragrant with masses of fruit.

306 Muscadet de Sèvres et Maine Sur Lie, Ch La Noë 2004 £19.50
309 Quincy, Domaine des Ballandors 2006 £25.50
310 Sancerre, Domaine Fournier 2006 £27.00
311 Pouilly Fumé, Dom des Fines Caillottes, Pabiot 2006 £29.50

 Rhône – White Wines

The wines of Châteauneuf du Pape carry the flag for the Rhone.  It is an area which in some respects lies waiting to be discovered by the wine drinking world and none more so than the white wines.

360 Sablet, Domaine de Piaugier 2000 £25.50
361 Châteauneuf du Pape, Domaine du Senechaux 2000 £33.50
349 Condrieu, André Perret 2002 £39.50

Alsace – White Wines

Alsace wines are mainly dry, fruity and full bodied, but can also be spicy and aromatic. Alsace Riesling has finesse, subtlety and a steeliness, which balances the fruit – a perfect partner to seafood. Gewürztraminer is naturally spicy and unctuous.

400 Pinot Blanc, Meyer-Fonné 2002 £24.75
402 Gewürztraminer, Hugel 2004 £31.50
404 Riesling Trimbach 2005 £36.50
405 Gewürztraminer Cuvée des Seigneurs de Ribeaupierre Trimbach 1988 £75.00
403 Riesling Clos St Hune, Trimbach 2000 £135.00
