Wine List

Our Wine Policy

Our wine buying and selling policy is very simple. We only wish to include wines on our list which we enjoy ourselves.

We have made no great effort to find the cheapest French  Chardonnay or Bordeaux.

There is no value at all in an undrinkable wine and very poor value in a badly made wine at whatever price!

We list good wine to be enjoyed at all price levels, from the amazingly well-made but underrated and unfashionable Spanish wines, to the mighty aristocrats from the best vineyards in Bordeaux.

A bottle of wine can be a pleasant and casual interlude, or a once in a lifetime event to be planned and anticipated with great relish.

We believe that enjoying a bottle of a fine first growth in a great year should be treated as a very special experience: something to savour and remember as a bench-mark against which to judge others less well.

We wish you a very enjoyable and memorable experience.

Burgundy – White Wines

The white wines from Burgundy include some of the greatest wine drinking experiences available. Few can argue that a Puligny Montrachet or Meursault from a good domaine in a good year is without equal.

The exciting differences in taste result from the French system of inheritance and the resulting patchwork nature of the Burgundian vineyards. They are divided into tiny areas, sometimes a fraction of an acre, and all bearing the same generic name. It is possible to have two wines produced from two rows of vines side by side, but from different producers using different methods of vinification, and with totally different results.

Loire – White Wines

The Loire is a huge wine growing area following the river Loire for a third of its meandering six mile length. Few wine drinkers can name more than one or two of the wines of the Loire. There are many grape varieties planted and the most common are Sauvignon Blanc used in Sancerre and Pouilly Fumé, Muscadet used in the wine of the same name and Chenin Blanc used in Savennierres. The wines of Muscadet are bone-dry and perfect with a plate of shellfish; Sancerre, Pouilly Fumé and Quincy are distinctive and more fragrant with masses of fruit.

White Wines From Around The World

Wines from America, Australia and New Zealand have been very popular in recent years because they are consistently well produced and are good value for money. Consequently they receive a lot of press coverage and then become fashionable. Demand goes up and as a result so does the price !

New Zealand is very promising with its more variable and temperate climate resulting in weather conditions more akin to Europe.

Austria – White Wines

Willi Opitz, manic wine maker from Austria, uses a most organic fertiliser in his Burgenland vineyard. He uses Camel and Llama manure!. His Pinot Blanc is vibrant, fresh and superbly structured, without a hint of Camel about it!!. Willi has won the prestigious title of Late Harvest Wine Maker of the year on several occasions. The half bottles of Goldackerl listed below illustrate why.

Germany – White Wines

One of the most enjoyable ways to drink a Hock or Moselle is as an apéritif. Fragrant and self contained, they tend to be medium to sweet.

Try the Beerenauslese as an alternative to Sauternes for dessert. It is wonderfully long on the palate without the heavy alcohol of the French equivalents.

Chile & Argentina are now beginning to attract significant attention from wine critics as areas producing well made value for money wines. Spain – White Wines

Spain, along with Provence, must represent the greatest untapped potential for superb wines. Regrettably, only a few enlightened owners recognise this and are now producing wine which is of more interest to the international palate.

Of these, Torres must stand head and shoulders above the rest. The red wines produced by this family-controlled firm are rare and magnificent and the white wines are exceptionally well produced. Milmanda is rich and complex and never fails to impress. Ask to see the bottle as all Torres wines have a detailed history of how they are made on the back label.

Red Bordeaux

Robert Parker opens the introduction to his authoritative and extremely useful book on the subject.with "Bordeaux holds the paramount position in today’s world of wine." Our attitude to Bordeaux wines is to buy good wine that is ready to drink now. Unfortunately this sometimes means that it is also expensive, but silly prices just mean that one cannot drink them so often, and that they must be truly savoured. Nevertheless, by spending a great deal of time with several Masters of Wines and with careful buying over the years, we have produced a superb list of wines, which are comprehensive, representative, and all are ready to drink.

Medoc , Haut-Medoc & Moulis

These wines are from important areas on the fringe of the major appellations, providing good value for money Bordeaux.

Burgundy - Red Wines

An "expensive nightmare," is how one well-known master of wine described the red wines of Burgundy. The combination of insatiable demand, relatively small production and a large number of greedy producers make it extremely difficult to find affordable Burgundy. The vineyards are divided into numerous small parcels owned by a plethora of different families and companies. Individual growers may for example produce just one barrel, enough to fill just 25 cases, of a particular appellation. As a result the Burgundian wine trade is polarised between growers and negociants. Behind a negociants label may well be the produce of many different plots and cellars. A good name or a good vintage is no guarantee of a good wine, but these in combination can produce stunning wines.

Beaujolais - Red Wines

Beaujolais produced from the Gamay grape, produces pleasant, seductive wines. The quality

rating is simple - at the lowest level is Beaujolais. Then Beaujolais Villages; at the top, the individual village names are used. Each village produces a wine with a slightly different character. All are light, fruity wines, but some like Moulin-à-Vent and Julienas are more robust, whilst Fleurie is soft, silky and lush.

Rhônes- Red Wines

For many of the Rhone wines their golden age was 2000 years ago when the Roman Legions were marching through this part of France to their outlying colonies. Since then these magnificent wines have been largely ignored and misunderstood. The predominant grape in the Rhone valley is the Syrah, ironically more familiar to many people in its Australian guise as Shiraz. Despite the grandeur and history of these wines there is nothing pretentious about their prices or proprietors.

South Africa - Red Wines

South Africa has been producing wine for many years but there has always been a tendency to rely on common bulk grapes. Since the re-opening to world markets in the Mandela era, the country has enjoyed access to consumers who have demanded wines made from noble European varietals. With quality grape production such a small proportion of the whole (only 18%) it is hardly suprising that there is now a shortage of such wine. Fortunately such scarcity is not yet reflected in prices demanded by the various producers.
